A pair of Scandinavian Art Deco candle holders by Josef Ekberg (1877-1945) for the Gustavsberg Porcelain Factory of Sweden, produced during the second quarter of the 20th century. The stepped candle holders have an iridescent luster glaze over a mottled green ground with hand-painted satin gold accents. Very good undamaged condition, measuring 3.75 in. height Fully marked underfoot: Gustavsberg / [anchor] / JE (Ekberg's artist cipher), a hand-painted N-130, and one also bears a printed 38. Designed for use with standard-sized taper candles. Josef Ekberg was a Swedish artist, designer, and ceramicist who became the artistic director of Gustavsberg in 1908 and was succeeded by Wilhelm Kåge in 1917. Ekberg is best known for his development of a hand-carved Sgraffito technique and lustered objects characterized by geometric shapes in bold colors with golden accents.
