A Josef Ekberg (1877-1945) Scandinavian Art Deco cabinet vase from the Gustavsberg Porcelain Factory of Sweden, produced during the second quarter of the 20th century. The ribbed vase is decorated with a striking iridescent luster glaze of marbled greens with hand-painted satin gold accents. The metallic glaze transforms the surface from a lighter green in daylight to a darker green under indoor lighting conditions. Very good undamaged condition, measuring 3.5 in. height x 4.88 in. diameter. Fully marked underfoot: Gustavsberg / [anchor] / JE (Ekberg's artist cipher) alongside hand-painted N-89 and printed 37. Josef Ekberg was a Swedish artist, designer, and ceramicist who became the artistic director of Gustavsberg in 1908 and was succeeded by Wilhelm Kåge in 1917. Ekberg is best known for developing a hand-carved Sgraffito technique and a line of lustered objects characterized by geometric shapes in bold colors with golden accents.
