A midcentury Kolmården rya rug or wall hanging designed by textile artist Marianne Richter (1916-2010) in the early 1960s for the Öster Gyllen (Eastern Gold) line of Scandinavian wool rugs for Wahlbeck's Fabriker in Linköping, Sweden. Richter's high-pile, textural design of a forest scene features bold vertical tree trunks with layered intersecting branches in shades of red, orange, coral, brown, black, and creamy-white. Rya rugs or ryamatta are traditional Scandinavian wool rugs characterized by their shaggy and luxurious pile. These versatile pieces of home decor were used interchangeably as carpets, bed coverings, and wall hangings. This rya was professionally cleaned and is in very good condition with minimal wear, just a few glue spots on the reverse, measuring: 46 in. L x 27 in. W / 3 ft. 10 in. L x 2 ft. 3 in. W. Marianne Richter trained as a textile designer at the Technical School in Stockholm. She began a 17 year association with AB Wahlbecks Fabriker in 1955 and is recognized for her cheerful designs and embrace of color and pattern.
