A midcentury Kolmården rya rug designed by textile artist Marianne Richter (1916-2010) in the early 1960s for the Öster Gyllen (Eastern Gold) line of Scandinavian wool rugs for Wahlbeck's Fabriker in Linköping, Sweden. Richter's textural design depicts a forest scene with bold vertical tree trunks and layered intersecting branches in a rich autumnal palette of gold, yellow and ochre with several shades of brown and creamy-white highlights. Rya rugs or ryamatta are traditional Scandinavian wool rugs characterized by their shaggy and luxurious pile. These versatile pieces of home decor were used interchangeably as carpets, bed coverings, and wall hangings. This rug was professionally cleaned and is in good condition with some wear and pile loss at either end, measuring 76 in. L x 51 in. W / 6 ft. 4 in. L x 4 ft. 3 in. W. Marianne Richter trained as a textile designer at the Technical School in Stockholm. She began a 17 year association with AB Wahlbecks Fabriker in 1955 to design rya rugs. Richter is recognized for her cheerful designs and embrace of color and pattern.
