A vintage hand knotted high pile wool rya rug designed by textile artist Birgitta Salenius (b. 1935) in the early 1960s for Nordiska Industri AB (NIAB) of Göteborg, Sweden. Salenius's "Alaska" design combines an artistic Nordic palette of light and darker grays, creamy off-white, and black with scattered pops of orange and pink creating a luxurious and dimensional Scandinavian Modern composition. The midcentury rug features a handwoven backing of linen and wool securing the lustrous 100% wool pile. Professionally cleaned and in very good condition with strong colors and some minor wear to the fringe, measuring 56 in. L x 36.5 in. W. / 4 ft. 8 in. L x 3 ft. 0.5 in. W. (excluding fringe).
Vintage Scandinavian rya rugs—sometimes called ryijys or ryamatta—are are versatile home decor textiles, historically used interchangeably as carpets, wall hangings or tapestries, and coverings for chairs, benches, or beds. These dense and luxurious artistic wool carpets are the embodiment of a cozy interior space and often designed and made by women.
