A vintage hand knotted high pile wool rya rug designed by textile artist Birgitta Salenius (b. 1935) in the early 1960s for Nordiska Industri AB (NIAB) of Göteborg in Sweden. Salenius's "Alaska" design artistically combines a Nordic palette of light and darker gray, creamy off-white, black, and brown with scattered pops of orange and pink creating a luxurious and dimensional Scandinavian Modern composition. The midcentury rug features a handwoven backing of linen and wool which secures the lustrous 100% wool pile. Professionally cleaned and in very good condition with minimal wear and strong colors, measuring 57 in. L x 37 in. W. / 4 ft. 9 in. L x 3 ft. 1 in. W. Rya rugs or ryamatta are traditional Scandinavian wool rugs characterized by their luxurious and shaggy high-pile. These versatile pieces of home decor were designed to be used interchangeably as carpets, bed coverings, and wall hangings.
