Customer Reviews
A simple and sophisticated Art Deco vase in heavy, hammered metal (likely copper) gilded in rich gold leaf by American metalsmith, jeweler and designer, Marie Zimmermann (1879-1972). The vase comes directly from the artist's estate and is Illustrated on page 66, fig. 2.26 of The Jewelry and Metalwork of Marie Zimmermann, 2011.
This handsome flaring vase form is the perfect focal point for a dining or library table or mantlepiece and its warm, metallic surface would display beautifully by firelight. The vase has visible hammer marks overall and is enveloped in an ornamental finish of rich gold leaf inside and out. The gilt surface is original and unpolished, showing scratches and spots of wear. The foot rim has a small ripple but sits flat and steady on a tabletop / surface. The vase has significant weight (1 lb. 11.8 oz) and in good overall condition, measuring 9.5 in. H x 5 in Dia. (at upper rim). The base is marked M. ZIMMERMANN / MAKER over her MZ artist cipher.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City holds the largest collection of objects by Marie Zimmermann, making their first acquisition in 1922. A variety of her designs in jewelry and metalwork can also be viewed in important collections of American decorative arts across the United States, including The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Wolfsonian-Florida International University and the Columbus Museum of Art.
Provenance: The Estate of Marie Zimmermann.
