Customer Reviews
A large Arts & Crafts double-handled and footed centerpiece bowl in copper with a gorgeous encrusted and abraded verdigris patina by Marie Zimmermann (1879-1972). The bowl comes directly from Zimmermann's estate, was published in her 2012 monograph, and dates to the early 1920s while this
noted American metalsmith, jeweler and designer
maintained a workshop studio and showroom at
the National Arts Club in New York.
Although created during the Arts and Crafts period, Zimmermann referenced several stylistic influences in the creation of this sculptural object. The form is reminiscent of a large-scale Scottish "quaich" drinking bowl but the deliberately encrusted and abraded verdigris patina gives the appearance of an excavated artifact from an ancient civilization.
The bowl is in v
ery good condition, measuring 16 in. L (at handles) x 11 in. W x 6.5 in. H and
is illustrated on page 118, fig. 3.51 in The Jewelry and Metalwork of Marie Zimmermann, 2012.
Zimmermann produced this same quaich bowl form in sterling silver and had one of two known silver versions professionally photographed by 1926. A sterling silver example of this bowl and the commissioned photograph also appear on pages 114, fig. 3.45 and page 188, fig. 3.52.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City holds the largest collection of objects by Marie Zimmermann, making their first acquisition in 1922. A variety of her jewelry and metalwork designs are also in the collections of The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Wolfsonian-Florida International University and the Columbus Museum of Art. Provenance: The estate of Marie Zimmermann.
