Customer Reviews
An Arts & Crafts period flaring vase in encrusted patinated copper resting on a ring foot by Marie Zimmermann (1879-1972), a noted American metalsmith, jeweler and designer active during the opening decades of the 20th century. The vase comes from the artist's estate and dates to the 1920s while Zimmermann had a workshop and showroom at the National Arts Club at Gramercy Park in New York.
The vase is in good condition with an encrusted and intentionally abraded patina, creating the appearance of a recently excavated, ancient artifact. The vessel is marked with Zimmermann's MZ artist's cipher on the base and measures 5.88 in H. x 5.75 in. dia. (at rim).
In addition to patinated copper, Zimmermann produced this footed vessel form in spun copper and again in sterling silver; this example in patinated copper is illustrated in "The Jewelry and Metalwork of Marie Zimmermann" on page 337, fig. 10.22.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City holds the largest collection of Marie Zimmermann's designs, making their first acquisition in 1922. Examples of Zimmermann's designs in metalwork and jewelry design are also in the permanent collections of The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Wolfsonian-Florida International University and the Columbus Museum of Art.
Provenance: The Estate of Marie Zimmermann.
