Customer Reviews
A rare matching set of four candlesticks by American metalworker, jeweler and designer, Marie Zimmermann (1879-1972). Each candlestick is fully marked and comes directly from the artist's estate.
This Arts and Crafts era design in heavily silvered copper dates circa 1915 during the years Zimmermann's atelier was at the National Arts Club at Gramercy Park in New York. Domed and fluted bases join fluted bobeche collars with simple tube stems. The surfaces show hammer marks
—
although likely cast — and the stems have double scored lines at top and bottom. Each candlestick includes a removable candle cup.
Each stamped Marie / Zimmermann / Maker around her MZ cipher over 75 (model number) underfoot.
Very good condition overall with small areas of oxidation, measuring 12.2 in. H x 3.38 in. Dia. (candle cup) x 5.25 in Dia. (base). A similar example of this form in gilded copper with twisted stems is illustrated on page 329, fig. 10.7 of The Jewelry and Metalwork of Marie Zimmermann, 2012.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City holds the largest collection of objects by Marie Zimmermann, accessioning their first object in 1922. Examples of her designs in jewelry and metalwork are also part of the permanent collections of The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Wolfsonian-Florida International University, and the Columbus Museum of Art.
Provenance: the Estate of Marie Zimmermann.
