Customer Reviews
A large antique vase in the neoclassical style with gilt metal mounts and a heavy colorless cut crystal glass insert. The tall and slender two-handled vase is an impressive 15.75 in. height and was created circa 1905 during the Art Nouveau / Jugendstil period by Orivit-Metallwarenfabrik AG of Germany, the vase was designed in two parts that join seamlessly. The gilded metal has a warm, satin gold finish and an abundance of Classical architectural details including pilasters, greek key motifs, leaves, and garlands with ribbons, atop a round flaring foot with a beaded border. The decorative metalwork encases a heavy, clear crystal glass insert with fluted decorations cut into four sides. Orivit sourced much of their crystal glassware from Val Saint Lambert of Belgium, whose main export clients included the Russian Imperial family. The vase is in very good condition with some wear to the gilt finish and a tiny loss at the tip of one ribbon. The crystal is clean and undamaged. The underside of the base is stamped with the Orivit AG mark over model no. 3131 and made in Germany. The letter K is stamped in the recessed part of the foot. Wilhelm Ferdinand Hubert Schmitz founded Orivit-Metallwarenfabrik near Cologne, Germany in 1894 and the firm quickly gained attention for their artistic metalware designs. Orivit won a Gold Medal at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900 followed by two Grand Prix awards and a Gold Medal at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. The company was acquired by WMF (Wurttembergische Metalwaren Fabrik) in 1905 and remained in business until 1914.
