A large Continental jardinière in copper with brass mounts, dating circa 1900. This imposing vessel was handcrafted in the Jugendstil style, the European version of Art Nouveau characterized by whiplash designs and natural motifs. The mixed metal planter rests securely on four out-swept cast brass feet. The ornamental brass whiplash accents and pair of handles swooping outward from under the rim are attached with copper rivets. Apparently unmarked but presumably of Continental European origin following the style and craftsmanship of Carl Deffner and Gebruder Bing of Germany. The decorative cachepot is in good condition with a darkened patina, small dings, scuffs and scratches, dark spots and old, encrusted verdigris. The interior is clean but shows evidence of many years of use. The jardiniere measures 9 inches height x 13.75 inches W (at handles) x 11 inches diameter (at widest) x 8 inches diameter (at rim).
