A Josef Ekberg (1877-1945) Art Deco wall pocket vase from the Gustavsberg Porcelain Factory of Sweden, produced during the second quarter of the 20th century. The lobed vessel fans outward in steps and is decorated with a striking iridescent luster glaze of mottled greens, blues, and purples with hand-painted satin gold accents. The metallic glaze transforms from a lighter green in daylight to a darker green under artificial lighting conditions. There are two holes on the reverse to enable display as wall decor. Very good undamaged condition, measuring 6 in. height x 5 in. W x 2.25 in. D. Fully marked on the reverse: Gustavsberg / [anchor] / JE (Ekberg's artist cipher) marks alongside hand-painted N-153 / r. Josef Ekberg was a Swedish artist, designer, and ceramicist who became the artistic director of Gustavsberg in 1908, succeeded by Wilhelm Kåge in 1917. Ekberg is best known for his development of a hand-carved Sgraffito technique and lustered objects characterized by geometric shapes in bold colors with golden accents.
