An American Arts & Crafts sterling on bronze box from the Heintz Art Metal Shop of Buffalo, New York, dating circa 1915. The mixed metal cigar box has a hinged lid with an unusual sterling silver overlay decoration consisting of three medallions resembling stylized arrowheads with a decorative upper garland uniting the design. The medallions use negative space to depict Canadian geese in flight over bodies of water. The interior of the lid has a narrow compartment designed to hold a matchbox and ashtray and the body of the box is partially lined with wood. The base is marked with a 4097 form number over an impressed Heintz mark consisting of overlapping "HAMS" letters enclosed within a diamond over STERLING / ON BRONZE / PAT. AUG. 27. 12. An impressed number 21 appears under these marks. Heintz Art Metal used production numbers 4000 - 4100s for their smoker's boxes and humidors; this box is marked 4097. The antique box is of substantial weight in good structural condition but there are a some cosmetic issues including scattered scuffs, scratches, and spots of wear to the patina; the lid was also cleaned at some point in the past. The base shows more wear, including remains of very old adhesive from felt strips and the remains of a circular white label. Please check the photos for these details. The box measures 7.5 in. Measures: L x 4.5 in. W x 3.25 in. H.
