An early 20th century champagne or wine bottle holder from Roberts & Belk of Sheffield, England, stamped with the English registration mark 438217, dating the design to 1904. The double-handle, cylindrical design in silver-plate rests on four flared feet and includes the original frosted glass insert that, at 4 inches diameter, is large enough to hold most bottles of champagne. Although made at the height of the Art Nouveau period in England, the pierced details and drop pendant motifs encircling the design reflect the the Vienna Secession's emphasis on repetition and symmetry. The antique wine cooler measures 7.5 in. W (at handles) x 7.25 in. H and is in very good condition with a some tarnish and wear related to age and use. The glass insert shows some darkening and outer scuffs from years of rubbing against the metal walls of the holder. The base is fully marked, bearing the Roberts & Belk Roman Lamp trademark, followed by the company's maker's marks over form number 6827 and English Registration number 438217. Please note: the bottle is shown only for scale and is not included.
