A vintage Memphis vase designed by British ceramicist Colin Melbourne (1928-2009) for Crown Devon Pottery at Stoke-on-Trent, England. Melbourne’s striking midcentury Memphis design consists of a satin black ground with contrasting golden accent bands decorated with black geometric lines. Although the vessel dates circa 1960, it combines a number of design elements into one unified form using an Egyptian color scheme, Art Deco geometry, and a flaring collar evoking Space Age design.

The vase is 7.75 in. H and is in very good condition with a small loss on the foot rim that is invisible unless the piece is upside down. Full Crown Devon printed factory marks on the base over Memphis and Colin Melbourne's printed signature. The base is also impressed with shape number CM4.

Colin Melbourne trained as a modeller at the Burslem School of Art and later became the Dean of the Faculty of Art and Design at North Staffordshire Polytechnic. In addition to his work in education, Melbourne executed designs for a number of English potteries including Beswick, Royal Norfolk, W. R. Midwinter Ltd., and W.H. Bossons, Ltd.
