Customer Reviews
A large antique gilt metal mounted vase with a heavy colorless crystal glass insert. The two-handled vase is an impressive 15.25 in. H and was designed in the Neoclassical style by Orivit-Metallwarenfabrik AOG in Germany circa 1905.
The outer gilded metal has a satin gold finish. The body is decorated with architectural details including pilasters, greek key motifs and openwork leaves atop a flaring foot. The decorative metalwork encases a heavy, clear crystal glass insert with starburst decorations cut into the upper side panels on all four sides. Much of the crystal glassware Orivit used was sourced from Val Saint Lambert of Belgium whose main export clients were the Russian Tsars.
The vase is in very good condition with some wear and several small nicks to the finish; the crystal is undamaged. The underside of the base is stamped with the Orivit AOG mark alongside Germany, D, 2897 A, and etched X20779 by hand.
Wilhelm Ferdinand Hubert Schmitz founded Orivit-Metallwarenfabrik near Cologne, Germany in 1894 and the firm quickly gained attention for their artistic metalware designs. Orivit won a Gold Medal at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900 followed by two Grand Prix awards and a Gold Medal at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. The company was acquired by WMF (Wurttembergische Metalwaren Fabrik) in 1905 and remained in business until 1914.
