An early 20th century Art Nouveau vase designed by Alf Wallander for the Rörstrand Factory of Sweden, circa 1904. The two handle porcelain vase features a Jugendstil decor scheme of chestnut leaves and pods hand-painted in an inky blue on a white ground. The vase came with two hand-written notes inside. The first reads, "Grandfather Holmstrom bought this in 1904 at the Swedish Exhibition at the St. Louis World's Fair." The second is dated 12/84 and reads, "According to my Mother, Grandfather bough this in 1904 at the Swedish Exposition. I thought it would go with your color scheme!" The vase was well cared for and remains in very good condition, marked DESSIN / ALF WALLANDER / Rörstrand underfoot, measuring 9 in. height x 7.25 in. W x 4.75 in. D. Alf Wallander (1862-1914) was a noted Swedish artist and designer. After training as a painter in Paris and Stockholm, he joined the Rorstrand factory in 1895, working as Artistic Director from 1900 to 1910. His work is represented in a number of museum collections including the V&A (Victoria and Albert Museum).
