Customer Reviews
An elegant Arts and Crafts era flaring vase in spun copper resting on a ring foot by Marie Zimmermann (1879-1972), a noted American metalsmith, jeweler and designer active during the opening decades of the 20th century. The vase comes from the artist's estate and dates to the 1920s while Zimmermann had a workshop and showroom at the National Arts Club at Gramercy Park in New York.
In addition to this example in copper, Zimmermann produced this footed vase form in sterling silver and again in patinated copper, illustrated in patinated copper in the Jewelry and Metalwork of Marie Zimmermann on page 337, fig. 10.22. The vase is in good condition with a few minor scratches and darkened, natural oxidation spots, measuring 5.88 in H. x 5.63 in. Dia. (at rim). Marked MARIE ZIMMERMANN MAKER around Zimmermann's MZ artist's cipher over form / model number 11 on base.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City holds the largest collection of Marie Zimmermann's designs, making their first acquisition in 1922. Examples of Zimmermann's designs in metalwork and jewelry design are also in the permanent collections of The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Wolfsonian-Florida International University and the Columbus Museum of Art.
Provenance: The Estate of Marie Zimmermann.
