A sleek sterling silver covered box from the Art Deco period by Marie Zimmermann (1879-1972), a noted American silversmith, jeweler and designer active during the opening decades of the 20th century. The vessel comes from the artist's estate, dating circa 1920 while Zimmermann maintained a showroom and workshop at the National Arts Club at Gramercy Park in New York.

The covered box weights 9.1 oz / 260 g measuring 4 in. H. x 4.13 in. Diameter, marked M. ZIMMERMANN / MAKER / STERLING over her MZ artist's cipher on base. Good condition with a few shallow scratches and cloudy surface spots that appear to be the remains of an old lacquer coating, No monograms.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City holds the largest collection of Marie Zimmermann's designs, making their first acquisition in 1922. Examples of Zimmermann's designs in metalwork and jewelry design are also in the permanent collections of The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Wolfsonian-Florida International University and the Columbus Museum of Art.
