A large antique ladle in solid sterling silver from Gorham Manufacturing Company of Providence, Rhode Island. The heavily ornamented ladle is part of Gorham Silversmith's elaborate Versailles pattern, designed in the Beaux Arts style by F. Antone Heller in 1888. The pattern was named for the French palace of Versailles and depicts classical-style figures surrounded by scrolls and foliate motifs. Heller was Gorham’s chief designer from 1881 until 1904.

This late 19th century piece was designed to serve soup, undoubtedly from an equally elaborate tureen. The ladle was well cared for and remains in very good condition. The ladle weighs a substantial 9 oz / 255 grams, measures 12.25 in. L. and the bowl measures 4 in. W. Marked on the reverse of the bowl with Gorham's lion-anchor-G trademark / STERLING / COPYRIGHTED '88. No monograms.
